DIARY:

OKAY - So it has been a LONG time since I wrote in my diary!  The puppies are now 7 weeks old and a LOT OF WORK.  They are busy, and fast, and have very sharp teeth.  They were all BAER tested (see the FAQ if you want to learn more) and all have normal bi-lateral hearing.  When we were at the Neurological Center getting their hearing done, there was a Shorthair puppy - probably 6 months old, getting its hearing done.  It came back deaf.  The lady was upset and told me this was suppose to be her husbands hunting dog.  My only response I could think of was "At least it won't be gun-shy".

The puppies have now had their first shot and have been wormed three times.  They are healthy and eating solid Purina Pro-Plan puppy food twice a day.  They are sleeping in crates together at night, and are outside during the day when we are at work.  They spend time inside each night, with baby-gates keeping them on the tile.  They each have very different personalities and are really fun to watch.  They are starting to "follow" so I can navigate them from one dog yard to the other dog yard and go right by the pool without anyone falling in (knock on wood).  In about two more weeks, they should be starting "housebreaking".  Hopefully mostly with their new owners, as I have my own to housebreak.  Leash training for me will not start for another month, but as puppies leave for their new homes, their owners will start them on leash training.

Puppies are 4 weeks old now and have been on puppy mash (puppy food, milk replacement and water mixed in a blender) for almost a week.  As you can see from the 4 week weights, they are all really gaining pretty equally.  They are starting to get some personality.  The HMF is the most reserved in the litter.  The DMM we are calling "Dora the Explorer" as she seems to venture out the most.

The DMM (who is also the smallest) is known as tough guy.  If you tickle his sides, he will growl at you and turn and try to get your fingers.  He is the most coordinated still and the most playful.  The HiDMM is also quite a personality and has his moments of being both reserved and super outgoing.  We might be calling him bi-polar.  The HMM and the SmDMM are both very level.  Neither too alpha, nor too shy.  Of course all of these personalities change change in a weeks time.  They are getting used to the tile floors, but still don't' like it.  It is too slick and too cold for them.  If we lie down towels, they will walk around on the towels.  The wood floor is even worse as it seems more slick for them.  Toenail trimming is now a huge battle.  As Cattle Dogs, they HATE being on their back.  So they spend a lot of time on their back.  Canine teeth are in and we are starting to look at bites.  No huge overshot mouths at this point (meaning the bottom canine is on the back side of the top canine - not good for a show dog).  They all seem to respond to weird sounds so that's good.    Below is a photo of the puppies and my daughter.  They all stayed on her back because they didn't like the instability of the wood floor... all expect Dora.  As you can see she immediately climbed down (see her second from the right) and (post picture) went around to lick and bite and my daughters ears.  Wood floors didn't bother her.

The puppies were introduced to their first party on 1/5.  We had about 30 people over and the puppies were in their hallway area.  It is a perfect area for viewing puppies because there is a pony wall that everyone can peer over.  The puppies got lots of loves, hugs and were passed around a lot.  The noise and commotion didn't seem to bother them at all!   All of their temperaments are beginning to take shape.

The puppies are five weeks old and have moved outside to the puppy jungle during the day.  They have experienced another surface - rock. They have all their toys, a dog house, some toddler play equipment, all in the confines of a 3' chain link fence.
