All dogs require boundaries. We bound our dogs by the walls of our house and the fences of our yards. A dog should never be left without knowing the boundaries and with out boundaries sufficient to not be compromised. How many of your have thought "if I was going to do it again, I would have..."? Because of the work my husband and I do, we have moved a number of times and have had the opportunity to "do it again" with our dog set-ups. This site is designed to share the lessons we have learned to help you design and construct the ultimate boundary for your new ACD. KENNEWICK, WA Below is the side view of our kennel facilities in Kennewick, WA. Seen is the 10' x 20' dog runs extending our from a stick framed building. The runs were sloped away from the building. The first 10' of the outside portion of the run was covered by an overhang. Large 4' gates were placed on the end of each kennel. At the end of each kennel was a 4' walk path and then a 4' gravel area. Hose bibs allowed easy washing of each kennel into the gravel portion. LESSONS LEARNED. Kennels sloped to the walk path result in a really pissy walk path (pun completely intended). Suggest a ditch at the end of each kennel.
The building not only providing the housing for the dog kennels, but half consisted of a three stall horse barn with tack room and full hayloft. In front of the kennels, a two car garage held the tractor and pickup. The building matched the architecture of the house with both building material, and roof pitch.
The kennel building sat next to the house on 5 acres. Below is a 1/2 acre dog exercise yard made with 5' chainlink. The entire yard had a 18" concrete base along the bottom of the fence to prevent dogs from digging out. This also result in a big aesthetic bonus as it was very easy to weedeat and gave the yard a very professional finish. The dog exercise yard was chosen on a sloped area of the property to allow the dogs to build muscle by playing on the hill.
A small arena was at the back of the property, perfect for Agility training and working small stock.
